FUN WITH RESEARCHING (May 2010)
I know that the May newsletter is dedicated to Elizabeth Shuler but I thought you might be interested in several responses that I received when researching her in Ancestry.com. First of all, I need to remind you that she was the wife of Obadiah Meeker Crane (Mary Ann’s father), so in making inquiries about Elizabeth invariably the Cranes surfaced.
Following is an email I received from Alan1 after he had told me I could edit what several other researchers had added about the Cranes. I wasn’t sure what he meant by giving me permission to edit so this is his response:

This gives you an idea of how many others are researching the Cranes. I haven’t even tried to go through Google because it is all history. As I get more information I’ll write about it because Alan1 says he has also taken the Cranes back to Charlemagne. So far, we go back twice to Charlemagne. How about that!
Another researcher who I will identify only as Carol sent me this:

I have no idea who Elizabeth DeWarrene is. I guess I’ll have to do as Carol does -- maybe rely on others or maybe check the history books.
And I was surprised to find an old friend whose wife is related through Mary Ann Crane. Jimmie Ferguson writes: “Yes, I am still at it and now that I am retired, I am getting a little more active.” What fun to renew an acquaintanceship after several years.
Another surprise was when I ran into someone researching Harry Durland. Of course I wrote back immediately. This was her answer: “Hi Mary, I thought you were a daughter of Harry Durland? (She wasn’t sure.) In my tree Fannie is the wife of Charles Durland. I’m sorry if I misspoke asking if she was your mother. What I did mean to ask is if she was your aunt…” I wrote her back and told her I knew Aunt Fannie well and I could even remember Uncle Charles Durland. Also, I told her I knew a child of theirs and his wife. (That would be Grace and Charles Jr.)
So you see, I could spend hours just on Harry Durland’s lines. If only I had the energy and time.
