HAPPY NEW YEAR (January 2011)
To all my readers, I wish you the very best for 2011. To remind you, last year was the year for those grandmothers who have had little or no recognition through the years. I hope you enjoyed knowing about some of those women in the family and when they lived. Perhaps you can imagine how they survived and admire them for all the hardships they endured.
This year my focus will be on AUNTS, UNCLES, AND COUSINS. This category might not be as interesting to you but you need to remember that siblings of our direct descendants also have a place in our history. I thought it would be easier for you to identify this month’s cousin if I included the picture below to help you. These are all uncles and cousins. Only number 7, James Youngs Durland (Harry’s father), is our direct ancestor. James’ brothers (and our uncles), are number 8, William Robert Durland, and number 1, Maurice Gould Durland. These are the three brothers of the Durland Hardware Store. The rest are all cousins and maybe a couple of aunts.

The cousin (Alice Durland Ryniker) of this month’s newsletter is a descendent of Maurice (number 1). Ruby, number 3, was the one who was so helpful to me. This was long before computers when all our correspondence was handwritten. I also have had a lot of correspondence with another descendent of Maurice, Don Durland, who lives in Decatur, Illinois, and his grandfather is number 11. My mother, Elvera, knew number 4, Helen Shriner, and corresponded with her. The others in the picture are unknown to me. Alice Durland Ryniker’s father, Clyde, who is a son of Maurice Gould (number 1), is not in the picture.
