CORRECTION (Sept. 1, 2009)
Through the diligence of my webmaster Jerry Larkin, who recently visited Milford, Connecticut, I’d like to correct what I wrote in my August newsletter (Issue 2) regarding the house that I said Robert Treat built for his daughter Mary. Jerry located the house in Milford, and a plaque on the house provided new information. This house was, in fact, built not for his daughter Mary, but for his daughter Abigail, who married Rev. Samuel Andrew, a most respected minister in Milford for over 50 years and a noted scholar and trustee of nearby Yale College. (An interesting side note: the daughter of Abigail and Samuel married Jonathan Law, who was Governor of Connecticut 1741-1750.)
Mary Treat married Azariah Crane in New Jersey, and if Robert had built a house for her, it would have been in New Jersey where she lived and died, not in Milford. Please excuse the mistake. I’m very glad that I was able to correct the misinformation. Thank you, Jerry, for your pictures and additions to the correction.
